Process

User-Centered Design Process
Discovery, Concepting, Prototyping & Testing.

My Role

Design Conception, UI/UX Design

Objective

A one month Intro to UX Design and Design Thinking methodologies March 2020. Designing a low/Mid-Fidelity to Mobile App that focuses on learning new vocabulary.

Product

A Vocabulary App, that enables the user to learn and apply new words in a playful way.

Discovery

Competitive Research

Identified and examined the advantages and disadvantages of three mobile apps according to the following criteria:

Findability, Accessibility, Desirability, Usability, Credibility and Usefulness;

User Research

interviewed three individuals, and my goal was to answer the following questions:

  • What motivates individuals to learn new vocabulary?
    What goals they try often to solve?

  • What helps most of them overcome their challenges and
    keep learning?

  • What experiences have individuals had with vocabulary apps?

Findings

  • Most individuals said they would be more motivated to learn if s.o. praised them for their performance.

  • Career advancement and expansion of personal horizons are typical motivations for learning a new language:

    "With a new language, I always gain a new view of the world. I am curious"

  • Winning and losing games with treasure hunting or gambling is very motivating.

  • Repeating a word in different contexts helps most people to remember the story.

Concepting

User Needs and Personas

Created a primary proto-persona and restate the project brief using user stories, job stories, and a problem/hypothesis statement.

User Flows and Task Analyses

Identified the main tasks the proto-persona will need to accomplish their goals by using card sorting method.

Prototyping & Testing

Wireframing and Prototyping

built the first iteration of wireframes and a low-fidelity prototype of the Mobile App.

Usability Testing

Conducted 4 to 6 usability tests with 3 to 5 participants, taking detailed notes on behavior, thoughts, and feelings they had while completing the tasks.
Synthesized the information in the form of a usability test report.

Results & Recommendations of the Usability Testing

• Introduce the user to Level-system;
• Use Latin words for better Readability for foreign speakers;
• Adding an Onboarding process for features;
• Showing the user’s progress on the home screen – being more engaging!
• Explaining the upcoming steps at the beginning of each step;

My Learnings

• Keep the interviews short and concise!
• Opinions are not proofs for users;
• Better fail after small steps than after significant steps;
